How to Choose the Right Label Material — Paper vs Film Guide

How to Choose the Right Label Material — Paper vs Film Guide

Choosing the right label material is one of the most important decisions in your packaging. The wrong stock can curl, smudge, peel in the fridge or fade in the sun — while the right one makes your product look premium and stays put for its entire shelf life.

Paper vs. Film

Paper labels are cost-effective and easy to print, with a natural, tactile feel. They suit dry-goods, gift packaging and many food products. However, paper is not water-resistant unless laminated.

Film labels (BOPP, PE, PET) are waterproof, tear-resistant and far more durable. They are the go-to choice for:

  • Beverages and bottles that get wet or chilled
  • Cosmetics and personal-care products
  • Chemicals and industrial goods
  • Anything stored outdoors

Matching the Adhesive

The adhesive matters as much as the face stock:

  • Permanent adhesive — the default for most products; a strong, lasting bond.
  • Removable adhesive — peels cleanly for promotions, returnable containers or rental items.
  • Freezer / wet-strength adhesive — holds on cold, damp or condensation-prone surfaces.

Tip: always tell your manufacturer the surface (glass, PET, HDPE, cardboard) and the storage conditions (fridge, freezer, outdoor). It changes the recommended adhesive.

Surface Finish

Finish affects both looks and protection:

  • Gloss — vivid colours, premium shine, great for cosmetics and liquor.
  • Matte — understated, modern, easy to write on.
  • Lamination or varnish — adds scratch, water and UV resistance.

A Simple Decision Checklist

  1. Will the product get wet or cold? → Choose film.
  2. Does it need a premium shelf presence? → Gloss film with foil or spot UV.
  3. Is it a budget dry-goods item? → Coated paper.
  4. Will it live outdoors? → Durable film + UV-resistant lamination.
